Anonymous asked: Okay, I fit the feminist ideal in my beliefs and morals and all, but I don't refer to myself, nor view myself as a feminist. I want equality for all, not just women. I mean, equality for women is a priority, and any form of sexism really pisses me off, but it pisses me off as much as any form of discrimination, be it based on gender identity, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, or personal beliefs. I guess what I'm getting at is, when you think of yourself as a feminist, or hear someone labeled as a feminist, do you assume they're just fighting for women's rights and equality?

The only reason this isn’t the strangest thing I’ve read all day is that I spent some time perusing the True Femininity blog. (Must…not…join…blogroll.)

So let me get this straight: You’ve either confused feminism with ‘female supremacism’ (“I don’t agree with their politics but boy do I enjoy their hardcore bands!”), or you think social justice is some kind of zero-sum situation (“Sorry, queer boys, only straight women get equality! I know it’s unfair, but there’s just not enough fairness to go around!”).

I don’t personally know anyone who calls him/herself a feminist who isn’t concerned with larger issues of justice and equality. There’s valid criticism to be leveled at an upper-class, largely white arm of the feminist movement whose members fail to examine their own privilege and end up doing a disservice to other marginalized groups, sure. But that doesn’t mean that we give up on feminism, or opt out of the word—that means we keep the word and we make it better.
